Signs of Bedbugs in Middlesex County

March 8, 2018 by Heidy

Signs of Bed Bugs in Middlesex County

Bedbugs are very cunning pests when it comes to concealing their presence. If you are not keen, you may live with them under one roof in for many days or months without noticing their presence. Some people are not even aware how a bedbug looks like and for that case, even if they bump on it, they just think it is a cockroach or just any harmless insect. Some residents of Middlesex County are caught by surprise when a pest control technician tells them that their homes, cars, or hotels have bedbugs because an association with tiny pests comes with a lot of shame. One of the most common questions they ask themselves after receiving such heartbreaking information is “ How comes I did not notice the bugs before they become so many?”

signs of bed bugs

Well, if you want to avoid the above question, here are the major signs to look for to identify a bedbug or establish a bedbug infestation.

  1. Stained beddings/upholsteries

Wherever there are bedbugs, you are most likely to see small spots with a color resembling that of rust. The spots are the excreta discharged by the bugs once they are done with feeding on human or animal blood. The stains are mostly found near the places where people rest, for instance on beddings, at the edges of a sofa cover, carpet and other such upholstered items. Therefore, if you see these spots, it advisable to have your place inspected properly to find out if actually there is a bedbug infestation and the exact affected areas.

  1. Tiny, brown exoskeletons

Bedbug Stains

The body of a bedbug is covered with an external skeleton which supports and protects the pest. Just like humans who outgrow their clothes hence the need for bigger ones now and then as they grow,  bedbugs also need new skeletons with larger sizes as they develop. Although there are many other insects which shed off their skeletons, an exoskeleton of a bedbug is unique since it is oval in shape, small, and has a brown colour.

  1. Itchy skin swellings at night

Bedbugs want to take all their valuable time to suck your blood without hurry. For that reason, they are normally active at night when you are too sleepy to disturb them as they feast on the blood. Although not painful, a bedbug bite causes a red and itchy welt. In case of a severe infestation or you have an oversensitive skin, bedbug bites can render you sleepless. Therefore, if you find yourself tossing in your bed a lot during the night as a result of itchy swellings, that is likely to be a bedbug issue.

  1. Bad odor

There is normally a strange odor wherever there are bedbugs in large numbers as a result of the pheromones released from the scent glands of these pests.  The smell is almost similar to that of a wet towel.

  1. Live, tiny insects

If you see any of the above signs, you can check the common hideouts where bedbugs retreat after feeding. These places include mattress seams, carpet edges, closet, bed edges and areas near a bed, for instance inside telephones, electrical outlets or books. Do you know how a bedbug looks like? Well, it is a tiny insect with a size like that of an apple seed (about 5mm). Middlesex County bedbugs are reddish-brown in colour and have flat bodies. However, a bedbug may appear swollen and bright red if you are seeing it within a few days following its feeding.

These are some of the telltale signs of a bedbug infestation. A comprehensive inspection is supposed to be carried out on your premise if you notice any of these signs to ascertain if there’s a bedbug infestation.

What to do when a bee stings you

February 15, 2018 by Heidy

What to do when a bee stings you – effective treatment methods!

This is an undesirable situation and needs to be tackled efficiently. While most bee stings are harmless and temporary in effect, some wasps and hornets have enough venom in one swarm to kill an adult human.

Primarily, there are two types of bee sting cases. One that involves an allergy and the other that doesn’t. The same bee species can produce dramatically different effects in different individuals. This is because in some people the venom act as allergens which triggers the immune system to take countermeasures.

The various symptoms such as dizziness, nausea, severe swelling of the face, lips etc indicate an allergy.

But if your body doesn’t react to the venom, the pain and itch will be tolerable and will fade in a short amount of time with a few home remedies.

Take These Curative Steps First

  1. The first step is examining whether the bee(s) has left a stinger in your flesh. Honeybees detach their stingers after an attack which also eventually kills them. The stinger contains venom and needs to be removed as soon as possible to contain the contamination. On the other hand, all the other species of bees including wasps and hornets do not shed their stings and can sting multiple times. You can use your fingernails, credit cards or other such thin yet hard films to remove the sting.
  2. Clean the area using cold water and soap. Cold water/Ice and soap leather are useful in removing the dirt and venom from the surface of your skin. It’s useful regardless of the involvement of an allergy.
  3. Determine whether you’re suffering from an allergy. The following symptoms indicate towards an allergy
  • Difficulty in breathing
  • Swelling of face, tongue, throat, and lips
  • Dizziness, fainting,
  • Hives and severe itching
  • Sped up Pulse
  • Nausea, and or Vomiting
  • Anxiety

Take Action Immediately

In case there is only a mild swelling and itch, there’s nothing to worry about. After removing the stinger and applying ice and soap, you can take one or few of the following remedial measures.

  1. Apply honey to the affected area. Honey has been known to have healing properties and are effective in reducing swelling and pain.
  2. Apply toothpaste to the wound. Most bee venoms are acidic in nature, which can be neutralized with a basic compound. Toothpaste is basic and therefore suitable as a neutralizing agent.
  3. Dip a cotton ball in cider vinegar and apply on the wound surface. There will be a momentary burn, and it will relieve you from the pain to a great extent.
  4. Make a baking soda paste and apply it on the affected area.
  5. To reduce the swelling and redness, use hydrocortisone cream or Calamine lotion.
  6. If the pain persists, take an antihistamine pill.
  7. Repeat the measures at a regular interval until the pain is gone.
  8. Take a tetanus booster shot if it’s been more than ten years since the last one.

Take Medical Help

If you’re suffering from some or all of the symptoms given in point three of the previous part, then you must immediately seek medical help. A severe allergy can be life-threatening if it’s not cured in time. Time is crucial in treating a bee sting, and reaching the hospital may take a while. Take an oral antihistamine to reduce the itching while medical help is on the way.

You can also use over the counter pain relievers in place of antihistamines.

The best precautionary measure you can take to prevent bee attacks is keeping your compound bee and wasp free. Middlesex County Pest Control is the most compatible pest control agency in Middlesex County. Our bee control services are efficient in removing all species of bees and have helped a plethora of citizens in and around the county. Call us today to schedule a free inspection.

Termites, How Dangerous Can They Be?

December 19, 2017 by cynthia

Termites, How Dangerous Can They Be?

termites in middlesex county

Termites are blind, highly social insects that have been around for thousands of years.  They are the most common pest, and they survive by eating wood. They adapt according to the environment and can go unnoticed for long periods of time. Termites work in a very orderly and systematic fashion and can reduce your furniture to dust (if untreated).

Having a termite infestation in your house can be highly worrisome and problematic. They eat all kinds of wood, weaken the floor and walls, and even damage the foundations. Damages caused by termites can cost you a lot of money, so it is always better to take action during the initial stages of finding an infestation.

“Millions of dollars are spent every year by residents to fix the damage caused by these stubborn pests.”

Termites Infestation: How Much Damage Can Termites Really Cause?

A particular species of termite (subterranean termite) can eat almost 15 pounds of wood in just 7 days! Termites live underground and travel to places where there is wood to feed themselves. They reproduce at a very fast rate, and one colony can give rise to many more (that go and infest other places).

Millions of dollars are spent every year by residents to fix the damage caused by these stubborn pests. Since termites eat wood, they can also indirectly cause electrical and plumbing issues. Termite-eaten furniture can hardly be reused, and a termite-infested house can be hard to inhabit.

Termites should be taken seriously, as their presence can greatly lower your quality of life!

“Having a termite infestation in your house can be highly worrisome and problematic. They eat all kinds of wood, weaken the floor and walls, and even damage the foundations.”

Termites Infestation: How Can I Tell If My House Has Termites?

Mentioned below are a few common signs of termites that you should look out for:

  • Termite mud pipes

These thin mud pipes are made by termites to protect themselves from dehydration while traveling.  Presence of these tube shelters or mud pipes indicates that there is an infestation nearby. These mud pipes can spread across large patches of walls and furniture and can be traced to find the source of the termites.

  • Termite wings

Thin, transparent, fish scale like wings are often left behind by termite swarms near an infestation. These flying termites are often mistaken for flying ants, so remember that termites are milky/translucent looking, and are flatter and smaller than ants.

  • Termite sounds

Termites make a click-click sound while consuming wood, so keep an ear out for these sounds coming from your furniture, walls, floors or wooden pillars.

  • Squeaking floors

Squeaking floors and loosening tiles are sure signs of a termite infestation burrowing away under the wooden surface.
